Dungonab Bay and Mukkawar Island National Park’s extensive beaches, islands and coastal plains support large populations of resident and migratory seabirds. Bird Life International recognized the area as one of eleven ‘Important Bird Area’ (IBA) in Sudan in 2001 (Criteria A1, A3, A4i) and as one of two marine IBAs in 2004. Dungonab Bay and Mukkawar Island National Park’s IBA status was awarded due to the significant populations of two species that have been classified as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN Red List, namely the sooty falcon (Falco concolor) and the white-eyed gull (Larus leucophthalmus). Other species found include lesser crested tern (Thalasseus bengalensis), white-cheeked tern (Sterna repressa), bridled tern (S. anaethetus) and sooty gull (Larus hemprichii). The marine IBA status is due to the presence of significant populations of white-eyed gulls and lesser crested tern.

Areas are awarded IBA status on account of the presence of populations of globally or regionally threatened bird populations.
